Paying it Forward
The SHU Spotlight Showcase is the direct result of a hand extended to me in 1986 by my then English teacher Sidney Krupkin. As if it wasn’t enough to be the most engaging educator in my high school he also gave so many students their stage debut as part of the McKinley Rock Ensemble. This yearly concert gave aspiring performers a chance to get on stage and mix it up with faculty, staff, students and alumni. I’m happy to report, Sid is still rockin’ but just in a warmer climate than Buffalo NY.
The Spotlight Showcase is a launching pad for singer/songwriters and performers here at SHU. In 2013 I recorded and produced a CD compilation for 6 of the spotlight artists. You can find those tracks on our website. www.spotlightmusic.us
Students in my Advanced Multimedia Production class organize and produce the show. They rotate positions and get out of their comfort zones by hosting, recording, promoting, and sometimes even performing. A truly ‘active and engaging’ classroom experience if there ever was one!
At each event you will find a charitable organization on the scene that we have invited to speak to the audience about their efforts. The concert series has raised hundreds of dollars for organizations such as Community Connections and Habitat for Humanity. Please consider making a donation to the organization at the show and we will give you a Spotlight CD as a thank-you present!
How can you help us “pay-it-forward”? Spread the word! Bring friends. Enjoy a fine cuppa joe and take in some great music.
Enjoy!
